As a senior, you may have fallen short in your retirement nest egg. You may either be looking for ways to save more before retirement or need an additional source of income while in retirement.
Side hustles are nothing to be frowned upon and can actually help you reach your financial goals a little quicker.
You might be dreading the thought that you might not have all of the necessary skills that some side hustles demand. Don’t worry – with the growth of the gig economy has come also the growth of the variety of side hustles available.
And not every side hustle demands using smart phone or driving all day.
So, I did some digging and was able to find a couple of side hustles that are absolutely perfect for seniors and can be done part time.
Rent Out Space in Your House or Get Paid to Stay in Other People’s Houses
Airbnb and TrustedHousesitters: two apps you may or may not have heard of.
Airbnb is an online application that allows people to rent out their houses, guest houses, or even just certain spaces in their house. Then people browse Airbnb for places to stay and pay you (through the app) to stay at your property for a certain amount of time.
People make a living by buying properties for the sole purpose of renting them out on Airbnb for a profit. You don’t have to do that though.
Try to find any extra rooms you have that you can maybe profit off of through renting them on Airbnb. The average Airbnb host makes $1,000 a month.
TrustedHousesitters is another online application involving property but in an entirely different way. People use the app to find house sitters to watch their property while they are out of town. Travel around the world and get paid for watching and staying in people’s houses.
You Can Even Rent Out Your Car
Turo is another application that allows you to rent out something of yours for passive income every month.
But instead of your house, you are renting out your car.
Turo allows you to rent out your car to people through the app without you ever having to do any real work. The idea is that instead of those people using companies like Hertz and Enterprise to rent a car, they rent your car using Turo for a lower price.
To find out how much you can make monthly with this side hustle, you can use Turo’s earning calculator.
Try Freelance Writing for Websites
If you love story telling and writing, why not get paid for it?
You can become a freelance writer online and write for websites you love to read. To find job listings you can either browse your favorite websites for any of their open writing careers or reach out to them directly through their contact form.
Another great way to find online writing opportunities is by googling them, joining freelance writing groups and communities on Facebook or check out any opportunities on All Freelance Writing.
Teach English Online or Tutor
If you have any teaching, tutoring or mentoring experience and a college degree, you can work part time teaching English online. Some perks include setting your own schedule and working from home.
There are various companies who are actively hiring new remote teachers and some even pay up to as much as $26 an hour. No need to worry about creating lesson plans either, all of these companies already do that for you.
This side hustle is great if you love to teach and interacting with others.
Sign up with Rent a Grandma
Rent a Grandma is an employment agency that actually places women over 50 with families looking for babysitting or light housekeeping services. Most of their employees average around 60 years old.
Rent a Grandma services include nannies, household maintenance, estate management, specialized services such as cooking and party planning, and pet sitting.
The site is similar to Angie’s list where people across the globe can browse resumes on the site for women in their area looking for jobs.
Get Paid for Being a Pet Lover
Speaking of pet setting – you might be surprised to know that with the rise of the gig economy, a flood of pet sitting apps and jobs hit the scene. One of my favorites that we have actually used for our dogs is Rover.
On Rover you can browse pet sitters in your area for a variety of services. These services include dog walking, dog sitting, going to people’s houses and feeding their pets, cat sitting, dog and cat boarding.
You can also set up your own pet sitter profile on Rover for others to book your services for their pet. The earning potential here can actually be quite high if you can book enough services.
For instance, I am looking at the app now and searching for dog walkers in my area. Most list dog walks for $20 or more and dog walks only last for 30 minutes (and you don’t have to go very far from the owner’s house). That is a $40 per hour earning potential.
If you take in a couple of pets for boarding while people are out of town, you can make $20+ per pet, per night
You are not limited to your age when it comes to making extra money.
Yes, the job market can be ageist and sexist but side hustles aren’t. There are side hustles out there for people of all ages. Some require more time and dedication than others and it depends on what your individual needs are.
Good thing there are tons of apps and opportunities more than ever. If you need help getting started, talk to your friends and family or others doing the same thing.
You got this.
